Best of 2013: Imogen Cunningham

"Imogen Cunningham was a true artist: throughout her long life she embraced the diverse developments of photography and the liveliness of the changing times in which she lived (1993-1976). An inspiration to successive generations, she was herself a vintage figure, a root of the ever-expanding family tree of photography that we continue to experience in our lives today. Her genuine human interest was on-going and is still refreshing now, at a time when photography has become overpowered by artistic re-interpretation and appropriated photographs themselves are seen as precious objets d'art. It is her modernist artistic legacy that has impacted photography most, but her thirst for experimentation was perpetual. Her integrity, frankness of opinion, her wit and respect of individual rights live on." Curator Celina Lunsford's text is reproduced from Imogen Cunningham, one of our top Holiday Gift Books of 2013.
