Wonderful, decadent Brassaï show opens at SFMOMA

"The more scrupulously [the photographer] has respected the independence and autonomy of his subject, and the closer he has gone towards it instead of bringing it nearer to himself, the more completely his own personality has become incorporated into his pictures." So said Gyula Halasz, aka Brassaï, the photographer perhaps most closely associated with the louche Parisian bohemia of the 1930s. Bal des Quatre Saisons, rue de Lappe (c. 1932) is reproduced from the magnificent new overview published to accompany the major Brassaï show which opens tomorrow at SFMOMA.
