Robert Frank: In America

Featured image is Bedrich Grunzweig's 1954 photograph of Robert Frank outside the Metropolitan Opera—less than one year before the young Swiss photographer would set out upon his epic journey across the United States. Grunzweig's photograph initiates Robert Frank: In America, Steidl's invaluable recent collection of mostly unknown Frank photographs made between 1947—when Frank arrived in this country—through the early 1960s—when he turned to filmmaking. Only a few of the photographs collected in this book appeared in The Americans; the rest have rarely been seen or exhibited. Frank will appear in conversation with his publisher, Gerhard Steidl, at the Tisch School of Fine Arts this evening. The event is sold out.
