Another kind of Americana in François Prost’s ‘Gentlemen’s Club’

Featured spreads are from Gentlemen’s Club, the newest in French photographer François Prost’s series of books documenting regional nightclub architecture. Taken during a road trip across the southern United States from Florida to California, the photographs in this appealingly-sized, 224-page hardcover specifically capture the facades of 200 strip clubs, all centered at medium distance, during the awkward daylight hours. This is landscape photography, social documentary, vernacular architecture and American road trip curiosity, all in one. “The focus for the visual objectives was turned onto the facades,” Prost writes. “I believe they say a lot about our societies. It is possible to study an entire country through its facades and the elements that surround them; names, banners, typography, colors, references... This project intends to paint a portrait of American culture and urban planning. It highlights the geometry, sometimes serious, sometimes colorful, of American road architecture and provides an overview of gender relations in American society.” More in the series here.
