A refined history of Modernist cutlery in ‘Knife Fork Spoon’

Spreads from new release Knife Fork Spoon: Modernist Cutlery 1900–2025, published to accompany the exhibition on view now at Denver Art Museum. Drawn from the museum’s holdings in combination with the renowned collection of Dung Ngo, publisher of August Editions, this illuminating 600-page compendium features more than 500 designs via 600 color reproductions. Pictured here, on the title page, details from a 2014 Malmö brass set by Portuguese designer Miguel Flores Soeiro for Herdmar. Below that, wooden salad servers by Danish designer Kay Bojesen of Kay Bojesan Studio, opposite a Contour sterling silver and stainless-steel set by Robert J. King & John Van Koert for the American brand Towle—both from 1950. And last, a stainless-steel children’s cutlery set by German designer Hans Karl Rodenkirchen for the brand Paul Wirths, 1960–61. Other designers span from Heinrich Vogeler to Virgil Abloh, from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, to Carl Aubock II, III and IV, to Gio Ponti, Isamu Noguchi, Philippe Starck and Zaha Hadid, to name just a few.
