McNally Jackson Seaport presents Tom Cole and Elliot Tuttle launching 'Chimes'

Thursday, October 22, from 7–8 PM, McNally Jackson Seaport presents Tom Cole, author of new release Chimes: A Monologue, a confessional narrative melding black humor with sincere insight that speaks on class, queerness and addiction. Cole will appear in conversation with filmmaker Elliot Tuttle, followed by a book signing. RSVP here.

Through a striking performative monologue, Chimes follows the distinctive voice of a first-person narrator recounting his experiences of shame, addiction and self-destructive behavior with mischievous humor. Now, after months of monotonous solitude, a storm of unresolved issues resurfaces, and his escalating feelings of alienation and unworthiness lead to unconventional solutions.

In the tradition of the plays of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Georg Büchner, Charles Ludlam and Sarah Kane, Cole weaves the very bleakest of humor with startling and heartbreaking feats of intimate self-reflection. Speaking on issues of class, sex, intimacy and the highs and lows of queer reality today, Chimes asks how and where one finds the answers to living a complicated life.

Tom Cole is a writer, performer and artist living between the Lower East Side and Kingston, NY. His work has been presented at Partici­pant Inc, Thread Waxing Space, Art on Air, Dixon Place, Clock­tower Gallery, ICA Boston, Performa, Howl Arts, Poetry Project and the Boston Center for the Arts. He is a three-time MacDowell Playwriting fellow, and an Edward Albee Foundation Playwriting fellow. Cole’s writing has been anthologized in Pathetic Litera­ture, edited by Eileen Myles; Sluts, edited by Michelle Tea; Flesh and the Word 4, edited by Michael Lowenthal; This New Breed, edited by Rudy Kikel, and Flashpoint, edited by Michael Bronski. His first book, Chimes: A Monologue is published by The Song Cave.

Elliot Tuttle is a filmmaker whose work revolves around themes of transgressive sexuality and its impact on the psyche. His debut feature BLUE FILM, starring Kieren Moore and Tony Award-Winner Reed Birney, premiered at The Edinburgh Film Festival and was released in theaters by Obscured Pictures to widespread critical acclaim. The film follows a fetish camboy (Moore) who agrees to spend the night with an anonymous client, only to discover a disturbing tie to his past. Vanity Fair praised it as “A radical queer drama... a kind of psychological thriller rooted in the taboo,” while The New York Times gave it a Critic's Pick, writing: "Tuttle dares to explore sexual deviancy with what can only be considered compassion and true existential wonder." Tuttle's narrative podcast, “Lina’s Song,” starred Hari Nef and Dylan Gelula and was EP’d by Mark Duplass, who was also an EP on BLUE FILM. He is a graduate of Occidental College, and lives in Los Angeles.
