Described by the architectural critic Sigfried Giedion as the “Magus of the North,” Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is the best-known Finnish architect of his generation and a leading proponent of a more human modernism. His buildings such as the Paimio Sanatorium (1933), the legendary Villa Mairea (1939) and the church of the Three Crosses in Vuoksenniska (1958), embody a masterful interplay of organic volumes, forms and materials. From door handles and lighting fixtures to built-in furniture, Aalto frequently designed complete interiors down to the smallest detail. With his plywood chairs, the master builder additionally became one of the most significant designers of the twentieth century. His Savoy Vase represents the quintessential qualities of Finnish and organic design. This richly illustrated book is the first in many years to offer a comprehensive and current overview of Aalto’s oeuvre as an architect, designer and urban planner. Ten authors, including the renowned architectural historians Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen and Akos Moravanszky, and MoMA curator Pedro Gadanho, address central aspects of Aalto’s work. Particular attention is paid to Aalto’s dialogue with important artists of his day, including Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder and Fernand Léger, as well as his interest in film, cinema and photography, whose influences on his work are examined here for the first time. The catalogue section presents numerous never-before-seen original drawings and architectural models from the archive of the Alvar Aalto Foundation. This perspective on Aalto is complemented with photographs by Armin Linke, who documented a number of Aalto’s buildings anew especially for this publication. As these images demonstrate, Aalto’s work is as current and inspiring today as it was at the time of its creation.

The human being was at the center of Danish modernism. Traditional craftsmanship and a high degree of quality influenced both its design and its architecture. Alongside the construction of numerous groundbreaking public buildings, the 1950s and 60s saw the design of many single-family homes based on an aesthetic that focused on truth to materials, honesty in construction and the reduction of form. Built of wood and brick and with practical, informal floor plans and large glass surfaces that opened up the interior of the house to nature, the best of these homes still fulfill their tasks to this day. Landmark: The Modern House in Denmark is a compendium of selected buildings examined in detail, including icons such as Utzon House by Jørn Utzon, Arne Jacobsen's Siesby House and the Bøgh Andersen House by Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert. It includes new, full-color photographs that document the buildings as well as discussions on the history of each one's design and construction. Biographies of the architects round out the volume.

Just before her death in 1944 at the age of 81, the Swedish painter and mystic Hilma af Klint stipulated that her paintings were not to be publicly exhibited for 20 years. In fact, another 40-plus years were to pass before inklings of her vast oeuvre began to reach public consciousness, with the landmark 1987 exhibition and book The Spiritual in Art. Since then, critics, artists and historians have praised her with ever-increasing awe, and today af Klint’s paintings, watercolors and sketches--numbering over 1,000 in total--have never looked so contemporary, presaging as they do the works of Beatriz Milhazes, Elizabeth Murray and Tal R., and Agnes Martin, Emma Kunz and Arthur Dove before them. For af Klint herself, as a medium for an art she was despairingly unable to comprehend, contemporaneity was irrelevant: her work--much of which was dictated by a spirit guide named Ananda--unfolded in complete ignorance of Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian, who likewise practised an abstraction informed by theosophy and occult philosophy. Af Klint’s abstractions preceded those of Kandinsky, who is usually credited with inventing abstract painting: as early as 1906, she was devising large-scale canvases filled with grids, circles, spirals and petal-like forms--sometimes diagrammatic, sometimes biomorphic. She was painting watercolor monochromes in 1916, and making automatic drawings long before the Surrealists. This monumental 280-page monograph, with 200 color plates, is the first full Hilma af Klint overview. A landmark publication, it not only reveals the moving lucidity of her art, but challenges the narrative of abstract art in the twentieth century.

Despite the brevity of his career, Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was one of the most celebrated architects of his time. Born in Finland, he immigrated to the United States in 1923, where his father was director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Here, the young Saarinen took courses in sculpture and furniture design, and began close friendships with fellow students Charles and Ray Eames, as well as Florence Knoll. As a designer, Saarinen moved easily between the so-called International Style and Expressionism, utilizing a vocabulary of bold colors, curves and cantilevers; many of his pieces have remained in production, becoming twentieth-century furniture icons. As an architect, Saarinen is responsible for some of the most potent architectural symbols of American identity including Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., and the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Published in Poligrafa's By Architect series, this volume surveys Saarinen's life and career.
