Intimate infinity in 'Vija Celmins'

“I’ve always been interested in very impossible images. Things blowing up, things disappearing in a breath. Things like the sky, which doesn’t even exist. There is no thing like the sky. It’s like a totally … who knows what it is.” So says octogenarian Latvian American artist Vija Celmins in this beautiful new retrospective monograph published by Hajte Cantz on the occasion of Celmins’ current exhibition at Fondation Beyeler. Featured image is Lamp #1 (1964). In addition to Celmins, Julian Bell, Jimena Canales, Teju Cole, Rachel Cusk, Marlene Dumas, Katie Farris, Robert Gober, Ilya Kaminsky, Glenn Ligon, James Lingwood and Andrew Winer contribute texts.
