Saul Leiter: Early Black and White

"Deborah" (c. 1947) is reproduced from Saul Leiter: Early Black and White, Steidl's excellent two-volume collection of the late photographer-artist's pictures from the 1940s and 50s—some of which are on view at the Photographer's Gallery in London through April 3. Max Kozloff writes, "He is able to convey the opacity and enigma of human beings, as if it were acceptable that they could be no better understood than are objects. In portraiture, especially, he evokes both these states of being and their quietude."
