“Painted Rain #3” (2022–23),

A significant new monograph on Pat Steir

“Painted Rain #3” (2022–23) is reproduced from new release Pat Steir: Paintings, published to coincide with the artist’s current exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, New York. Clothbound, with 167 color reproductions over 264 beautifully printed pages, the book was designed in collaboration with Steir. In a published interview, Evelyn C. Hankins asks Steir about expression, and traces of the self, in the work. Steir responds, “By pouring the paint or throwing the paint, I take myself out of the painting, but there’s always intention and setting limits. So I intend to make a painting, and I set the limits. I’m not totally out of it, but I’m not using it to express myself. I really believe that if you’re suffering from a need for self-expression, you should see a therapist. You should talk it over; you shouldn’t make art. That’s not the purpose of art, in my opinion.”
