Lipstick Flavor: A Contemporary Art Story with Photography

Ryan McGinley's 2013 photograph "Susannah (Swampsticks)" is reproduced from Lipstick Flavor, edited by Jérôme Sans and Marla Hamburg Kennedy and published by Damiani. Several years in the making, this fashionable compendium of contemporary art photographs with lips or lipstick front and center features work by more than 30 artists, including Nobuyoshi Araki, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Inez & Vinoodh, Catherine Opie, Laurie Simmons, Alex Prager and Martin Parr - to name just a few. "Lipstick Flavor is an echo of the famous book by Greil Marcus, Lipstick Traces, about the punk generation in London at the end of the 70s," the editors write, "an aesthetic created as a rebellion against the arts and the society of the past, against the institution of good taste." Featured this week on The New York Times T Magazine Viewfinder!
