Quietly inspiring photographs of Queens, New York, by two American masters

A West Indian bakery, a Chinese funeral parlor, an Italian ice stand, a Hindu temple, a Halal Thai restaurant and a Spanish-American podiatry practice are just a few of the eclectic small places of business that come up in Frank Gohlke & Joel Sternfeld: Landscape as Longing, Steidl’s quietly inspiring new joint-monograph collecting the artists’ photographs of Queens, New York. Pink and white balloons peek from behind the woven slats of a dilapidated chain-link fence in one Sternfeld photo of an East Elmhurst Quinceañera celebration; a primitive boardwalk leads into the marsh at a Douglaston environmental center in another photo by Gohlke. A wonderful story by Suketu Mehta is packaged in an attached envelope at the back of the book in a separate, small pamphlet.
