The fully illustrated monograph Ruth Pastine: Limitless situates the artist’s work in the context of twentieth- and twenty-first-century painting, abstraction, minimalism and perceptual art in relation to Light and Space through an examination of the tensions that drive her practice: materiality and immateriality, the known and the unknown, the finite and the limitless. Ruth Pastine: Limitless also contributes new scholarship from practitioners who demonstrate a longstanding commitment to contemporary painting, Light and Space, post-war abstraction, and minimalism, and to the growing swell of critical interest in women artists who have been historically influential but underrepresented and less known internationally.

Born in New York and based in California, Ruth Pastine (born 1964) is known for her minimalist color field paintings and multi-panel installations evocative of the Light and Space movement. For more than 40 years, she has pursued a phenomenological investigation of visual perception through paint's relative qualities of color, saturation and depth.

Shana Nys Dambrot is an art critic, curator, and author based in Downtown LA. A contributor to the Village Voice, Flaunt, Artillery, and other culture publications, she was the Arts Editor for the L.A. Weekly from 2018-24. She is the recipient of the 2022 & 2024 Mozaik Future Art Writers Prize, the 2022 Rabkin Prize for Art Criticism, and the LA Press Club National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Critic of the Year award for 2022.

Andrea Gyorody is a curator, writer, and cultural strategist whose work explores abstraction, politics, religion, and cultural memory in modern and contemporary art. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University. She is a frequent contributor to Artforum and her writing has also appeared in Hyperallergic, ARTnews, Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles, and numerous exhibition catalogues.
