Titian

In Silvana's substantial monograph on the great Italian Renaissance painter Titian, Giovanni C.F. Villa quotes an entry in Delacroix's diary on October 4, 1854. "Titian, here is a painter to be savored as you grow older… I confess that I did not appreciate him at all when I greatly admired Michelangelo and Lord Byron. He moves us, I believe, not so much through depth of expression or understanding of the subject as through simplicity and lack of affectation. In his work the pictorial qualities are taken as far as possible. What he paints is painted. The eyes look and are animated by the flame of life. Life and reason are present everywhere." Featured image is Venus of Urbino, 1536-8.
