Sophie Calle as Spie: Suite Vénitienne

Printed on Japanese paper with a die-cut cover and printed edges, this beautifully produced artist's book was designed in collaboration with Sophie Calle and documents in images and diaristic texts her dreamlike surveillance of Henri B., a man she followed from Paris to Venice, trailing him for two weeks. One of 10 books included in T Magazine's portrait of Calle in books, it was also reviewed by David Ulin of the Los Angeles Times. "For Calle," he writes, "the idea is to push the bounds of propriety, to go where one wouldn’t ordinarily go. This is—have no doubt—an assault on privacy, autonomy, undertaken without permission and enacted for the public, a public with which the subject may or may not wish to engage. That’s one of the challenges of her work, the discomfort we feel as she crosses the line."
