Essayist Anna Villari writes, "The 'tomboy' appeared in Italian magazines like La Scena Illustrata, a bimonthly review of literature, art, theatre, news and sport founded in 1885 by Pilade Pollazzi in Florence, with an international slant and elegant Art Nouveau graphics. In the 1920s, its pages were full of delightful young women, sporty, casual, impish, and often single, captured in a moment of pleasant leisure with their girlfriends, and more than anything else, crazy about shopping."
