Neo Rauch: At the Well

In Neo Rauch: At the Well, Norman Rosenthal writes, "As with Dürer and Cranach, filtered also by nineteenth-century medievalism, not to speak of the modern, Rauch’s paintings make the Germanic-strange seem normal. In paintings such as Späte Heimkehr (Late Homecoming)" (2013), pictured here, "a melancholic angel returns home as a giant, while the other family figures are in a state of alienated inwardness and perhaps prayer, but like all his characters, seem to be avoiding contact with each other. What is the metaphysical meaning of the image? The artist must have his own agenda over which the viewers can perhaps project their own fantasy and narrative."
