George Herms: The River Book

"Beauty" (1978) is reproduced from George Herms: The River Book, Hamilton Press' essential new monograph on the pivotal California assemblage artist known equally for his work on films such as Easy Rider, his collaborations with Wallace Berman and Diane di Prima, his hand-printed books and avant-garde theater works. Unbelievably, this exquisitely produced, slip-cased, two-volume set is the first comprehensive publication ever devoted to Herms' work, and it is truly a treasure trove, featuring not just reproductions of Herms' artworks in all media, but a wealth of archival photographs and a DVD containing Herms' free-jazz opera, The Artist Life and a slide show of several hundred collage works.
On Tuesday, September 16, New York poet and critic John Yau will appear in conversation with Herms at The Strand, to be followed by a book signing.
