Chris Martin

It's always exciting when an underrepresented artist receives notoriety that's long overdue. Especially a humble, even mystical artist's artist like Brooklyn-based Chris Martin, who has been working steadily on an inquisitive, iconic and strangely illuminating body of paintings, drawings and collage works for more than 30 years. This week, PictureBox released a gratifyingly monumental collection of Martin's drawings, which weighs in at just over 620 pages and features a provocative essay by Peter Lamborn Wilson, who manages to evoke Hindu Tantric paintings, psychedelia, outsider art, Siberian shamanism, Theosophy, Voodoo, Nietzsche, Redon, Wilde, Blake, and more. Featured image, an untitled 1998 acrylic on paper, is reproduced from Chris Martin: Drawings.
