Ad Reinhardt: How to Look

"The Art Universe is Square. Art is a Big, Booming Flux-Phenomena and Ablyss. Your Soul's a sold-circle in the company-square. The Art-House is not a Home." So ends Ad Reinhardt's "Joke" entitled A Portend of the Artist as a Yhung Mandala, originally published in the May, 1956 issue of ARTnews. Detailing the interrelationships of Art and Government, Education, Business and Nature with Artist as Explainer, Cathartic, Commodity and Recorder, among other culture-world connections, this typically critical and detailed illustration is among 43 of the artist's Art Comics collected in Hatje Cantz and David Zwirner's new release, How to Look, with essay by Robert Storr.
