Cindy Sherman: 2016

"Untitled #566" is reproduced from Cindy Sherman: 2016, a book that is perfect in its tiny charm. Just 6.5 x 8 inches and 64 pages, this shimmering clothbound volume presents 40 new works by the artist—the first in five years—which many will know from the tremendous press that they generated when they were shown at Metro Pictures in the spring. Depicting fictional Hollywood actresses of the 1920s just a bit past their prime, "they are definitely women of a certain age who refuse to disappear into a mythological background," according essayist to Betsy Berne. "There's a deep pathos in their expression, in their gestures, in their poses; it's unsettling, profound… All of them, even the goofy few among them, seem to be saying 'fuck you' with your assumptions of who we are—and your high-minded probing analysis behind why we are who you think we are."
