Holiday Gift Gold in 'BAGGU: Hold Everything, 15 Years'

Ah, the Standard Baggu bag. You know it. Everybody knows it! Pictured here, from 2007, is the original design in ripstop nylon, from BAGGU: Hold Everything, 15 Years, a comprehensive visual archive of the textile patterns, materials and products produced by the beloved American accessory company that spawned a million copycats. "We buy the original sample fabric from a mill that specializes in parachutes," authors (and designer-founders) Emily Sugihara and Ellen Vanderlaan write. "After sewing dozens of prototypes, we create the Standard Baggu. We focus on ease of construction, simplicity and strength. The whole bag is made from a single piece of fabric. We use nylon 6 as our production material, a textile that has the potential to be closed loop. 'Closed loop' refers to an infinitely recyclable product that indefinitely maintains the integrity of its properties. Though we search for a recycled nylon 6, we can’t find one, so we begin production with a virgin variation and keep looking. We construct a small pouch from the bag’s neckline cutout. This original Standard Baggu—and its accompanying storage pouch—is the design we still produce." Read more about the book, which features 600 color reproductions and comes bound in one of five different fabrics from the Baggu archives, here. See more Holiday Gift Staff Picks here.
