Hans Eijkelboom: Good Intentions & Modern Housing

Photo Notes on an Amsterdam Suburb

Edited by Hans Eijkelboom, Sabrina Kamstra. Text by Hans den Hartog Jager.

Dutch photographer Hans Eijkelboom (born 1949) is fascinated by the clash between the idealistic constructions and aspirations of modernism and the harsh fact of his own living environment. In 2008 the Art Foundation of Amsterdam's Academic Medical Center (AMC) commissioned the artist to document the Bijlmer, a district in southeast Amsterdam, which both he and the AMC call home. Eijkelboom took 12 photos every month over a period of one and a half years and displayed the steadily expanding series on a temporary wall at the AMC hospital. His photos capture the diversity of the area, telling the story of the place and the varied people who live there. This special album of photographs from the series is accompanied by an essay by art critic Hans den Hartog Jager. The publication also includes a textual collage by the photographer himself, which traces the turbulent genesis and development of the Bijlmer since the 1970s.

FROM THE BOOK
"[Eijkelboom]...is getting closer than ever to the ideal of the Becher couple, his great German predecessors; Eijkelboom must have done his absolute best to avoid any suspicion of composition, transience or subjectivity in his Bijlmer photos. For instance, there are no indications at all about weather or temperature: no sun, no rain and no snow. These photos could be taken again at any moment. And that is why there are hardly any people to be seen: with their short-term hairstyles and clothing, they would only distract attention from the apparent objectivity that is so important to Eijkelboom. And yes: precisely because of the apparent objectivity, the emphasis lies even more on the objects themselves. Actually this is true of all the series in this book. Whether it is the little bridges, or the cycle paths, or the way a cash machine is placed in the outside wall: they practically explode with the spirit of the age."
