Long-lost photos from the 1970s in 'Tina Barney: The Beginning'

Featured spreads are from from Tina Barney: The Beginning, published by Radius Books. “It’s impossible to go back in time and dissect specific moments in your life that seem more like a dream than reality," Barney writes. "Photographs are the only proof we have that memories aren’t fictitious. They are our evidence. In digging through the thousands of my 35mm negatives I took between 1976 and 1980 for this book, I tried to remember what I was like, what I was thinking, and what my intentions were. I know, for sure, I was an intense person. I took life seriously. I was driven to explain my purpose for choosing the situations, faces, and places I decided to record. I think I was terribly angry, or maybe anger is part of youth. I so deeply understood the perfection of my life, the splendor of the landscape, the houses and their interiors, and the people I cared for more than words can say. These feelings were so profound that I had to do something about it. I wanted people to notice what was around them. I also knew that there was a preciousness to every single detail and that I had to preserve what I could before it disappeared.…”
