Lipstick Flavor: A Contemporary Art Story with Photography

Mickalene Thomas' 2008 "Portrait of Qusuquzah" (reproduced here), Juergen Teller's 2004 nude self-portrait with cigarette and lipstick, Stephen Shore's 1973 photograph of a Palm Beach matron in feather boa, and Linder's 1977 photo collage of a woman with an iron for a head and smiling, lipsticked mouths for nipples, are just a few of the iconic and provocative images collected in Damiani's new compendium of mouthy, lipsticky art photographs. "Why is it that lipstick—and by extension lips themselves—have written so many stories," Jérôme Sans and Marla Hamburg Kennedy ask in their Introduction. "Lipstick is ultimately an evocative or provocative sociocultural aspect of a situation, a way to tell a story without voice, but with a taste that lingers." Featured this week in The New York Times T Magazine Viewfinder.
