Congratulations Jennie C. Jones, on view at the Guggenheim!

"8 Track" (2007) is reproduced from Jennie C. Jones: Compilation, a book that we are delighted to revisit this weekend, in honor of the artist's one-person show at the Guggenheim. "Jennie C. Jones is a conceptual artist whose works on paper, on canvas, and in sound frame questions about the estrangement of the black avant-garde amid the radical shifts in the visual arts that took place in the mid-twentieth century," Valerie Cassel Oliver writes. "Her artistic experimentation, which swivels progressively and seamlessly from two and three dimensions to immersive sound installations, engages in dialogues that are aesthetically and politically astute. Not only does Jones use the language of one of the most iconic and ideological shifts in twentieth-century painting, she also interrogates the medium from the inside out, adapting the underpinnings of early conceptualism to the field of painting and dragging its ideological notions of representation onto the terrain of gender and race."
