Jack Whitten and the rock-bottom meaning of universality

"Art must satisfy a very specific personal longing for universality," Jack Whitten wrote in 1979. "A desire to feel completely satisfied. A part of the total structure of things. Abstraction is the only possibility for this type of satisfaction, with figuration we are forever depicting something other than the rock-bottom meaning of universality. For this technological age abstraction is the language." Black in Time I (1980) is reproduced from More Dimensions Than You Know: Jack Whitten, 1979–1989, published by Hauser & Wirth.
