We will miss Huguette Caland (1933–2019)

"Visage (Bribes de corps)" (1979) is reproduced from Everything Takes the Shape of a Person, 1970–78, the first major monograph on the groundbreaking octogenarian Lebanese painter who died this week. In an interview with Hanan al-Shaykh, published in the book, Caland comments, "I never sit down in front of a drawing or a painting and think, 'I'm going to paint something erotic.' Erotic means life, there is no life without some form of eroticism. You can't separate eroticism from life."
