Dan Flavin: Series and Progressions

"As I have said for several years, I believe that art is shedding its vaulted mystery for a common sense of keenly realized decoration. Symbolizing is dwindling—becoming slight. We are pressing downward toward no art—a mutual sense of psychologically indifferent decoration—a neutral pleasure of seeing known to everyone. The lamps will go out (as they should, no doubt). Somehow I believe that the changing standard lighting system should support my idea within it. I will try to maintain myself this way. It may work out. The medium bears the artist." New from David Zwirner Books and Steidl, Series and Progressions examines Dan Flavin's (1933-96) use of progressions and serial structures in his fluorescent light sculptures. Rich, precise printing, impeccable photography, a wealth of archival materials, an interview with artist Dan Graham and texts by noted art historians Anne Rorimer, Richard Shiff, Alexandra Whitney and Tiffany Bell, who quotes Flavin above, make this an essential publication for all art libraries. Featured image is "Untitled" (1968) from Two Primary Series and One Secondary (1968).
