Christo and Jeanne-Claude: In/Out Studio

Featured image, Carroll T. Hartwell's 1966 photograph of Christo and Jeanne-Claude in Minneapolis during the installation of 42,390 Cubic Feet Package (an artwork that involved 2,800 colored balloons wrapped in plastic and lifted 20 feet off the ground by a helicopter), is reproduced from Christo and Jeanne-Claude: In/Out Studio, which launches April 1 at 192 Books. Christo is quoted: "The idea of a sublime artist who works alone in his studio is a relatively modern one. The great artists of a thousand years ago, the Maya, for example, created many works in a natural environment. The lonely artist who works away in a studio—that’s just the restricted bourgeois notion of the artist."
