Celebrated photographer David Goldblatt dies, aged 87

We will miss South African photographer David Goldblatt, whose most recent book joined our list this spring. "Between the earliest and the latest photographs in this book there were some 72 years," he wrote. "Time, you would think, for me to have become quite clear about what I want to photograph. You would be wrong. It is sometimes as difficult now as it ever was in the earliest years to know what to photograph and where to find it. My friend Barney Simon once told me that I am a prowling animal searching for prey. I thought that was rather harsh, but not altogether untrue. There are times while working on an idea when I have a vague sense of something unknown that I want to photograph. I can't say what it is, but I tell myself that I will certainly know it when I see it. Which is not a very dependable operating principle. There have been occasions when I have driven around some part of the country for two or three days searching for something unknown without making a single photograph. I assure myself that this process is essential to clarifying the mind."
