Selling shadows: 'Academy of Tal R'

"Old God" (2000) is reproduced from Academy of Tal R, new from Koenig Books and the Louisiana Museum. Essayist Anders Kold compares the artist to Sigmar Polke, writing, "Tal R, too, is selling shadows, in the sense that he creates art in which emotion is the most powerful visual effect, without nearing painterly expressionism. It is emotion in a mythologized form, linked to emancipation and combating narrow-mindedness, not only artistically—but also personally, socially and politically."
