Tracy Austin in the 1978 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, reproduced from
CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 9/3/2017

Does anything look as great as 70s Women's Tennis?

“Der Star 1978.” Tracy Austin, age 15, won the first ever Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in 1978, after a thrilling final against Dutch powerhouse, Betty Stöve. The ruffled bloomers, pom-pom socks and pigtails were only a façade: Austin swept her opponents off the courts and cemented her place in a sport that was just then becoming open to women athletes on par with men. We feature this photo, reproduced from Steidl’s vivacious new visual history, 40 : Love, 40 Years of Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, on the occasion of the 2017 US Open, which plays throughout this Labor Day weekend and continues until September 10.
