Canada

One of the first contemporary galleries based on the Lower East Side, CANADA opened in 2000, originally occupying a small basement space. The gallery was founded by a small group of artists—Phil Grauer, Sarah Braman, Wallace Whitney, and Suzanne Butler—committed to promoting the work of both emerging and established artists, including Joe Bradley, Matt Connors, Brian Belott, Katherine Bernhardt, Xylor Jane and Joanna Malinowska. In addition to solo and group shows by gallery artists, CANADA has hosted a range of unconventional events, exhibitions, and performances. The gallery was set up as a commercial instrument in order to critique and compete with the art marketplace of New York. As an artist-run cooperative, CANADA remains unconventional in its structure and divergent in its programming. CANADA opened its current space, located in a former printing shop on Broome Street, in September 2013.

NEW PUBLICATION

Katherine Bradford: Paintings

Edited with text by Dan Nadel. Text by Karen Wilkin, Arthur Bradford.

New York–based painter Katherine Bradford (born 1942) creates color-drenched scenes of swimming, water and gatherings of men and women, exploring how we see ourselves in relationship to each other with images that seem to generate their own milky and dreamlike light. Bradford spends months and sometimes years building up the surfaces of her paintings, slowly changing the paintings through repeated application of thinned-out acrylic paint. This book, her first monograph, collects her best paintings from 2015 to the present, alongside essays by Karen Wilkin, who explores Bradford's relationship to the history of American painting; Arthur Bradford, the painter's son, who . . . .go to book page >>

Xylor Jane

Text by Em Rooney, John Yau.

This is a hybrid artist’s book and drawing monograph by the Massachusetts–based painter Xylor Jane (born 1963), whose works based on or derived from numbers and other systems of order has found critical acclaim among curators and artists internationally.
Her often brightly colored, immaculately constructed and executed paintings run parallel to, and are informed by, a drawing activity that is much about notating her daily life as it is comprehending the role of numbers and their history.
This book for the first time focuses on her drawings and notes, sequenced by the artist herself. This sequence, which includes work from the mid-2000s . . . .go to book page >>
