The drop-deadpan landscape photographs of Gohlke and Sternfeld

As readers of the New Yorker now know, Gerhard Steidl makes seriously spectacular photography books. To our delight, we just received copies of Steidl's newest, Landscape as Longing. A drop-deadpan collection of Queens, New York, landscape photographs by American legends Frank Gohlke and Joel Sternfeld, this volume does not romanticize. The poetry is in the barbed-wire parking lots, the elevated subway platforms, fenced-in driveways, wholesale/retail corner shops and the vinyl siding. Featured image, titled “Wedding palace – Myrtle Ave. and Stephen St. Ridgewood, Queens,” is by Gohlke, 2004.
