Hanne Darboven: Boundless

Oliver Helbig's photograph of the radical, influential and highly idiosyncratic German conceptualist Hanne Darboven at the Burgberg, her family estate / studio in Hamburg, is reproduced from Boundless, Verena Berger's truly fascinating new biography just out from Hatje Cantz and available at our new Los Angeles store, opening Sunday. Accessible and revealing—even dishy—for an artist biography, this beautifully written and well-researched volume is a must for anyone interested in twentieth century art, conceptualism, feminism or eccentric genius. Interviews with peers including Lawrence Weiner, Carl Andre, Joseph Kosuth and others are well illustrated with archival images. "On the one hand, Hanne was upper-middle-class, but on the other, extremely radical," Kaser König is quoted. "What she did she did 100 percent—and she could really go to extremes in the process. I mean not only in her art, but also in her relationships."
