Essay by Jhim Lamoree. Afterword by Karel Schampers. Published by Artimo/Basalt & Van ZoetendaalArno Nollen's photographs of young girls are a shocking slap in the face. They also ask a fundamental question: Are you a voyeur if your subjects are complicit? The girls here, sporting bruises, tattoos, see-through pantyhose, hard looks, freckles, and often nothing at all, are poised between childhood and adulthood. Even the simple headshot portraits provide an uncomfortable gaze at an uncomfortable age.
