Schâfer's title, from Melville's Mardi, describes a sailor who can no longer be sure of his identity, who finds himself between real and spirit. It mirrors the artist's dizzying work, wall drawings from an immense store of ornamental, structural, textural and figurative sources, overlapping in pictorial frenzy.
