This artist’s book collects 85 landscape drawings by Scottish-born, Los Angeles-based artist Euan Macdonald (born 1965). Euan Macdonald: Selected StandardsEuan Macdonald: Selected Standards

Published by JRP|Ringier.
Edited by Kathy Slade and Christph Keller.

Euan Macdonald’s Selected Standards is an artist’s book that combines title pages from sheet music found in a secondhand store in Los Angeles with drawings and aerial photographs of the city. The represented songs are hits from jazz musicals from the 1940s and 50s. Some are well-known standards, while others are obscure. The song titles contain philosophical moments, familiar and peripheral experiences--some imagining a better world or offering a fleeting chance to escape our own. When he first encountered the sheet music, Macdonald was intrigued by the narrative relationship that developed between the titles, which are presented in the order in which they were originally found. In the spirit of improvisation and free association so closely linked with jazz, Macdonald paired each song with drawings made in his studio and aerial photographs of Los Angeles.

Euan Macdonald: EverythinghappensatonceEuan Macdonald: Everythinghappensatonce

Published by Verlag Fur Moderne Kunst Nurnberg.
Essays by Barbara Fischer, Ann McDonald, Midori Matsui, Giorgio Versotti and Lisa Gabrielle Mark.

The multitalented Euan Macdonald comes from all over: he was born in Edinburgh in 1965, moved to Canada with his family as a kid, then headed still further west to settle in Los Angeles as an adult. everythinghappensatonce brings together his video works, drawings and paintings influenced by all those places--its title is also the subtitle of his 1999 video Home, whose ironic, distanced approach is characteristic of the production strategies he has been employing for years. His videos find him an eyewitness to the unconscious and the casual. His drawings, despite tie-ins to the motifs and themes of his videos, preserve their autonomy as significant works of their own.
