Hippie Chic

Published by MFA Publications
Text by Lauren D. Whitley.

Featured image is reproduced from Hippie Chic. The 1960s saw a revolution in fashion that was born, like most things new and hip in that era, of youth rebellion in the streets. For the first time, designers didn’t dictate the trends. Instead, the latest looks trickled up into the top fashion houses (Halston and Yves Saint Laurent among them), by way of bohemian boutiques and avant-garde labels with names like Granny Takes a Trip and Cosmic Couture, and musicians like the Beatles, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Defying easy definition but becoming an international phenomenon all the same, hippie fashion twisted and turned from trippy to retro and crafty to ethnic. The accompanying idea that one can express a personal style with clothing went against everything about the previous generation’s notion of matching suits or ladylike ensembles dictated by social class or profession. Sumptuous photography, dynamic design, and far-out images from the era make Hippie Chic a must-have book that goes past peace signs and patchouli to unearth how hippies forever changed the way fashion functions.

Featured images—Scottish designer Bill Gibb's Woodland print dress, originally published in the 1972 issue of Brides; photographer Patrick Litchfield, featured in the November, 1967 Vogue; a tunic dress, circa 1970, designed for Yosha Leeger and Barry Finch's Cosmic Couture line; Giorgio di Sant'Angelo's Botticelli-inspired fantasy dress in sheer printed silk; Jim Morrison and his girlfriend Pamela Courson (seated) at their offbeat hippie clothing boutique, Themis, circa 1970; and Karen Seltenrich in a vintage dress, as pictured on the cover of Rolling Stone's 1969 "Groupies" issue—are reproduced from Hippie Chic.

Hippie Chic Arrives in Boston

Hippie Chic Arrives in BostonThis week, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston opens Hippie Chic, a fresh look at hippie couture of the 60s and 70s, with a focus on the top fashion houses influenced by street culture. With passages on psychedelic design, cosmic couture, 60s dandyism, granny style, the gypsy look, Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan and Victorian influences, Asian and Middle Eastern exoticism and the American frontier aesthetic—not to mention a wealth of archival photographs from the rock and folk music scenes—the scholarly yet exuberant exhibition catalog is a must-have for stylists and period enthusiasts everywhere. Featured image, originally published in the December, 1969, issue of Vogue, is reproduced from Hippie Chic. "The blue sky and exotic tile work of the shrine of Harun-i Vilayat in Isfahan, Iran, complement Halston's sumptuous panne velvet robe, tie-dyed in blue, white, and green. Halston became enamored with tie-dye in the late 1960s and patronized several different artists." continue to blog
