Bauhaus 1919–1933: Workshops for Modernity, originally published to accompany a major 2009 exhibition, is The Museum of Modern Art’s first comprehensive treatment of the subject since its famous Bauhaus exhibition of 1938, and offers a new generational perspective on the 20th century’s most influential experiment in artistic education. Organized in collaboration with the three major Bauhaus collections in Germany (the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, the Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau and the Klassic Stiftung Weimar), Bauhaus 1919–1933 examines the extraordinarily broad spectrum of the school’s products, including industrial design, furniture, architecture, graphics, photography, textiles, ceramics, theater and costume design, painting and sculpture.
Many of the objects discussed and illustrated here have rarely if ever been seen or published outside Germany. Featuring approximately 400 color plates, richly complemented by documentary images, Bauhaus 1919–1933 includes two overarching essays by the exhibition’s curators, Barry Bergdoll and Leah Dickerman, that present new perspectives on the Bauhaus. Shorter essays by more than 20 leading scholars apply contemporary viewpoints to 30 key Bauhaus objects, and an illustrated narrative chronology provides a dynamic glimpse of the Bauhaus’ lived history.

Eduardo Paolozzi was one of the most innovative and irreverent British artists of the 20th century. Considered the “godfather of Pop art,” his powerful collages, sculptures and prints participated in and pushed back against the currents of postwar British art history, from his 1947 collage “I Was a Rich Man’s Plaything” to the 1950s “Geometry of Fear” sculpture, through the Swinging Sixties and on to the advent of “Cool Britannia.” In the event of a nuclear holocaust, J.G. This fully illustrated catalogue accompanying Charlesworth's first major survey in New York features series such as Stills (1980), a group of 14 large-scale works rephotographed from press images that depict people falling or jumping off buildings; Modern History (1977-79), which pioneered photographic appropriation; the alluring Objects of Desire (1983-88) and Renaissance Paintings (1991), which continued Charlesworth's trenchant approach to mining the language of photography; Doubleworld (1995), which probes the fetishism of vision in pre-modernist art and marks Charlesworth's transition to a more active role behind the camera; and her final series, Available Light (2012).
Sarah Charlesworth was born in 1947 in East Orange, New Jersey, and received a BA from Barnard College in 1969. She was the subject of a 1997 retrospective organized by SITE Santa Fe. Charlesworth taught photography for many years at the School of the Visual Arts, New York; the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence; and Princeton University, New Jersey. She died in 2013 in Falls Village, Connecticut.

Robert Longo was born in Brooklyn in 1953 and received a BFA in sculpture from Buffalo State College in 1975. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Longo collaborated with musicians loosely associated with New York's No Wave movement, such as Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham and Jonathan Kane, and formed the band Robert Longo's Menthol Wars. In the 1980s, as his Men in the City drawing series was winning him critical acclaim, Longo also directed several music videos, including New Order's “Bizarre Love Triangle” and R.E.M.'s “The One I Love.” In 1995 he directed the cyberpunk film Johnny Mnemonic, starring Keanu Reeves, Dolph Lundgren and “Beat” Takeshi.

In addition to being represented in many of the country’s most important museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, he has been highly influential in his role at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, where he has taught graduate level courses for many years.
