Dennis Hopper: On the Road

Edited by José Lebrero Stals.

Dennis Hopper: On the RoadDirector, actor, photographer, artist and art collector, Dennis Hopper was a man of diverse talents who intersected with countless key moments in American culture--particularly, and most famously, in the 1960s. Hopper’s great gifts as a photographer are well established, with many of his images having entered public consciousness. This handsomely produced volume looks at Hopper’s photography throughout its glory years, from 1961 to 1967. In these years, Hopper carried a camera everywhere, from bars to marches, art openings to freeways. Conceived as a kind of road trip across America, the book runs the gamut of 1960s counterculture and film culture, taking in Warhol’s Factory (where Hopper spent much time), film shoots, street scenes, road trips and of course the classic portraits of movie stars, musicians, artists, bikers and activists, from Martin Luther King to Allen Ginsberg and James Brown. The result of exhaustive research into the artist’s archives at the Dennis Hopper Art Trust, and with a wealth of previously unpublished images, Dennis Hopper: On the Road offers a first-hand, collective portrait of an era.
Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) was an American actor, filmmaker and artist. An exceptional creative talent, his work in film, photography, painting and sculpture gained him both critical acclaim and a high public profile. He won an award at the Cannes Film Festival for 1969’s Easy Rider. His photographic work continues to be featured in high-profile international exhibitions.

Lorna Koski

The book is meant to resemble a road trip across America, and it covers film shoots, movie stars, musicians, artists, street scenes throughout the country and Warhol's Factory, where Hopper spent a lot of time.

The New York Times Book Review

Luc Sante

The pictures are joyous, unsurprisingly: Hopper then had the world in his pocket.

Dennis Hopper: On the Road

Dennis Hopper: On the Road

"I was born in Dodge City, Kansas, and am really just a middle class Farm boy at heart. I really thought acting, painting, music, writing were all part of being an artist. I never thought of them as being separate." So said American icon Dennis Hopper, who died in 2010. Featured photograph, of artist Ed Ruscha in Los Angeles, 1964, is reproduced from Dennis Hopper: On the Road, the new collection of Hopper's photographs of the 1960s, featuring many images that have never been published before. Published by the Museo Picasso Málaga to accompany an exhibition on view in Spain through September, this definitive survey also includes a bound insert of artworks by Ruscha and other pop art peers, many of whom are captured in Hopper's photographs. continue to blog
