An impressive feat of book design, this hardcover, paper-over-boards volume boasts debossed front and back covers, spine, half-title and full-title pages, with full-color printing on beautiful matte paper throughout. The book is designed by the widely admired Li, Inc., and printed in an edition of 2000. Kate and Laura Mulleavy's careful arrangement of photographs by Opie and Soth presents a complete portrait of the Rodarte project, in which unconventional fashion shoots sit alongside Polaroids of landscapes, objects, vignettes and other inspirational materials for Kate and Laura Mulleavy's vision. An artist’s book insert reproduces the collaged manuscript of a meditation by John Kelsey.

“For this book, two photographers were commissioned by Rodarte. The designers provided Alec Soth with a map of California, marked with suggested routes and sites, as well as loose instructions for photographic content (Condors, forest fires, people sleeping, etc). Catherine Opie’s task was to photograph the clothing on models. One camera follows a roadmap, the other documents design. Informed by a cartographic impulse, or by the desire to link fashion design to the production of spaces and worlds, the book folds the trajectory and speed of a road trip into the static fashion image. The book, itself a kind of map or topological system, also splits the fashion image in two: landscape and portrait. […] And who are the models in Opie’s photographs? Some are friends, some are strangers, others were probably hired from an agency. In any case, this is not a typical casting: the Rodarte brand has been populated by models and non-models, insiders and outsiders, inviting a sort of social erosion or contamination between body types, age groups, gender orientations and life-forms. Step by step, shot by shot, the book disorients the fashion image and reactivates it as a map instead. In the book, fashion keeps getting away from itself, losing itself.” —John Kelsey

Congratulations to Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, winners of the 2010 National Design Award.

Rodarte, Catherine Opie, Alec Soth

By Kate and Laura Mulleavy. Photographs by Catherine Opie, Alec Soth. Edited by Brian Phillips. Text by John Kelsey.

California Condors, Boris Karloff as Frankenstein, Japanese horror films and Gordon Matta-Clark are among the many influences that make up the world of Rodarte. In just five short years, Rodarte has upended the fashion scene, bringing Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the designers behind the company, to the forefront of contemporary design and visual culture. Kate and Laura, who live and work between downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena, California, have consistently brought their love of nature, film, art and science to bear upon their unconventional and exquisitely crafted collections. Burning, sanding, dyeing, knitting, twisting, staining and weaving are some of the many complex techniques that have entered into the Rodarte textural vocabulary. Kate and Laura's past collaborations have included artists, actors, musicians and writers such as Miranda July, Autumn de Wilde, Ryan McGinley, Ari Marcopoulos and Darren Aronofsky. Created in collaboration with two of the art world's most sought-after and acclaimed photographers, Catherine Opie and Alec Soth, this is the first publication to examine the world of Rodarte. For the occasion, each photographer has developed an entirely new body of work in collaboration with Kate and Laura Mulleavy, examining the many facets of Rodarte's creative spectrum.
Without any formal training in fashion, California-raised sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, working as Rodarte, have become the most celebrated American designers at work today. Celebrities such as Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman and Charlotte Gainsbourg have all expressed their admiration for the Mulleavys, and Michelle Obama wore Rodarte at the opening ceremony of the 121st IOC session at the Copenhagen Opera House.
