| | | CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 6/30/2016THURSDAY, JUNE 30 from 7-8PM, Strand Books presents Carrie Mae Weems in conversation with Adrienne Edwards—scholar and curator-at-large at the Walker Art Center—in celebration of the Kitchen Table Series, published by Damiani.
CARRIE MAE WEEMS’ stellar career in photography and the arts took off two and a half decades ago with the completion of her Kitchen Table Series, classic, revolutionary images of home life that dramatized theretofore unexamined aspects of black life. The series’ mix of personal and archetypal aspects of home life, its measured depiction of relationships between men and women, the old and the young, has made it a touchstone since its first exhibition in 1990.
For the first time, the Kitchen Table Series has been restored and recontextualized in book form, with a print edition from Damiani featuring an essay by Adrienne Edwards, scholar and curator-at-large at Minneapolis’ influential Walker Art Center. Join Edwards and Weems in the Rare Book Room for a discussion of the genesis, execution, and legacy of the iconic work.
