Nuevo New York

Photographs by Hans Neumann & Interviews by Gabriel Rivera-Barraza

Published by Damiani
Text by Ben Rodriguez-Cubeñas.

Featured photograph, of Argentine art director / fashion consultant Sofía Sánchez de Betak, is reproduced from 'Nuevo New York.'

Portraits and interviews with prominent NYC Latin Americans including Andres Serrano, Carolina Herrera, Enrique Norten, Jose Parla, Proenza Schouler, María Cornejo and Isabel & Ruben Toledeo.

Nuevo New York is a collection of portraits and interviews with influential Latin Americans who came to New York City to pursue their ambitions. The portraits are born out of a collaboration between two authors who made the journey from Latin America to New York themselves--photographer Hans Neumann (born in Peru), and fashion publicist Gabriel Rivera-Barraza (born in Mexico). Each figure included in Nuevo New York is an important player in the fields of fashion and the arts, having lived in New York City for at least five years and having gained recognition for their work. Neumann and Rivera-Barraza trace how their subjects came to be who they are today, and what role the city of New York has played in their trajectories. Interviewees include Andres Serrano, Candy Pratts Price, Carolina Herrera, Enrique Norten, Estrellita Brodsky, Francisco Costa, José Parlá, Lazaro Hernandez, María Cornejo and Nina Garcia.

PRAISE AND REVIEWS

Vogue

Patricia Garcia

New York has always been known for its diverse mix of cultures and nationalities. But in today's heated political landscape, immigrants have become a sore subject in an increasingly hostile debate. With all this incessant talk of building walls and mass deportations, Nuevo New York, a new book celebrating notable Latinos in the culture capital of the world, aims to challenge those negative notions.

The Guardian

Immigration to the US is a hot topic of the 2016 election, with Trump's campaign creating an increasingly hostile environment. Nuevo New York... adds a new narrative to the conversation, challenging negative stereotypes with portraits and interviews with Latin American New Yorkers who have made their mark on artistic and cultural life in the US.

The New York Times

Valeriya Safronova

...role models in the creative industry for a younger generation of Latin American descent...
