When it was established, Architecture Research Office (ARO) represented a new breed of firm—one of the first to be defined by its purpose rather than by a last name or an eponymous acronym. Architecture. Research. Office. documents the firm’s ethos and culture that has quietly shifted the architectural field’s outlook. For the first time, this book meticulously compiles over 30 of ARO’s most significant projects, including the renewed Rothko Chapel and Campus, the boathouse in Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the world’s largest LGBTQ+ synagogue, Congregation Beit Simchat Torah.

Architecture Research Office (ARO) is a New York City firm united by their collaborative process, commitment to accountable action, and social and environmental responsibility. Their architecture unites beauty and form with strategy and intelligence. This philosophy has earned the firm over one hundred design awards including the 2020 AIA Architecture Firm Award, the AIA New York State Firm of the Year Award, and the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Architecture.

Her studio of four designers includes Rebecca Sylvers, lead designer for the ARO book. They have created books for numerous artists and more than forty museums worldwide. Since 2020, Miko has taught in the architecture department at MIT.
