Sarah Hermanson Meister and Richard B. Woodward present New Documents

Tuesday April 4 from 7:30 - 8:30 PM, Strand Bookstore presents MoMA curator Sarah Hermanson Meister and critic Richard B. Woodward discussing the enduring significance of the groundbreaking 1967 MoMA exhibition New Documents, curated by John Szarkowski and featuring the work of relatively unknown American photographers Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, and Garry Winogrand.

MoMA Presents 'Arbus Friedlander Winogrand: New Documents, 1967' at the Strand

In 1967, when Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, and Garry Winogrand were still relatively unknown, curator John Szarkowski featured their work in the groundbreaking exhibition New Documents at The Museum of Modern Art. Although few could have predicted it at the time, it would become one of the most influential exhibitions of photography in the 20th-century, signaling a watershed moment in the history of American photography.

Despite the importance of New Documents for posterity, no catalogue was produced at the time. Published in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the exhibition, Arbus Friedlander Winogrand: New Documents, 1967 presents for the first time the 94 photographs that hung on the walls of MoMA, freshly contextualized with an abundance of archival material, including Szarkowski’s original wall text, the Museum’s press release, installation views, previously unpublished internal memos, images from the opening reception, and clippings of significant critical reviews.

MoMA curator Sarah Hermanson Meister and critic Richard B. Woodward will discuss the enduring significance of the exhibition and the legacy of these three artists.

SARAH MEISTER is a Curator in the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

RICHARD B. WOODWARD is an art critic who contributes regularly to the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.
