Dan Walsh and Bob Nickas to launch 'The Process of Painting' at Paula Cooper Gallery

Thursday, May 2, from 5–6 PM, Paula Cooper Gallery and JRP|Editions present the launch of Dan Walsh: The Process of Painting. Surrounded by his current exhibition of paintings, on view through May 18, Walsh will be in conversation with independent curator and critic Bob Nickas, who contributes the text for the book.

Expanding his investigation into system-based abstraction, Walsh’s new paintings appear effortless and inevitable despite the exacting process of their making. The composition of each painting is grounded along the lower edge and employs a vocabulary of unit-based forms—including lines, circles, lozenges and rectangles, with some structured around a loose pyramidal shape.

With this publication, American artist Dan Walsh allows the reader to enter his studio and follow his idiosyncratic artistic process. By showing the different stages that a group of 12 recent works (2019–2022) navigated, he generously offers an insight into how a painting is built, how colors and forms merge together, how photography is a precious tool for painterly thinking, and how composition and structure are organic processes even if the result in his case is fundamentally geometrical and grid-based.

JRP|Editions has also collaborated with the artist to make a series of three different editions of lithographs titled "Bridge." Each lithograph in the series is an edition of 25, available on the JRP|Editions website.
