A Photographer’s Journey Through Grief and Gardening
Foreword by Jane Fulton Alt. Text by W.M. Hunt, Doug Tallamy, James Baraz.
How one woman sublimated sorrow into regeneration by carrying through her deceased husband's ambitious native garden project
Celebrated American photographer Jane Fulton Alt (born 1951) was never a gardener. That changed overnight when her husband Howard unexpectedly died, leaving behind a partially realized native garden—his response to a deepening concern about climate change. With the help and encouragement of her husband's mentors, she picked up a spade and began to dig, assuming full stewardship of the native garden while finding a new source of creativity and sustenance amid the grieving process. Still Life: A Photographer's Journey through Grief and Gardening is a story of resilience. Alt's keen eye and deep insights instruct us on how personal loss can be a catalyst for transformation. With texts by teacher and founding member of Spirit Rock Meditation Center James Baraz, native plant evangelist Doug Tallamy and photography impresario W.M. Hunt, Still Life is a quiet and moving reflection on loss and renewal.

Featured spreads are from new release Still Life: A Photographer’s Journey Through Grief and Gardening, Jane Fulton Alt’s response to the sudden loss of her husband, whose garden she learned to tend from scratch as she moved through the stages of mourning. "I was never a gardener," she writes. "Then my husband died, leaving behind an extensive, newly planted native garden. His radical transformation of the green space around our home was stunning. He worked tirelessly and methodically as he pulled up our lawn and seeded a sanctuary. In the autumn of his life, he planted a garden for the future. I asked him one day, 'When you are gone, who is going to take care of these gardens?' He
just looked at me and smiled. Little did I know these gardens were to be the greatest gift he could have given to me. The garden and the camera have been loyal and constant companions, a potent combination in adjusting to this new life. These photographs and thoughts represent the start of my journey." continue to blog
