Museum Store of the Month: MASS MoCA

Located in the vibrant, light-filled, converted print factory that is now the renowned Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the newly-opened MASS MoCA Research & Development (R&D) Store combines gallery and retail space focused on exhibiting, producing and procuring affordable contemporary artist editions and (if we do say so ourselves) books of the highest quality.

Museum Store of the Month: MASS MoCA

Host to author events, book and record launches and intimate performances, the R&D Store’s nimble model of public programming advances and supports MASS MoCA’s creative impact and mission.

Museum Store of the Month: MASS MoCA

In just two months, the store has hosted: authors (Isaac Fitzgerald, Kerri Schlottman, M.R. O’Connor, Ben Sisario & Donna Kozloskie and Helen Molesworth), photographers (Holly Lynton, Kevin Bubriski & Xtina Parks), and artists (Carrie Schneider, Marika Maijala) and produced a limited-edition flashcard set with Joseph Grigely.

Museum Store of the Month: MASS MoCA

It means so much to us to see tables and shelves filled to capacity with books on the most relevant, interesting and surprising artists in print.

Museum Store of the Month: MASS MoCA

We love a store that is so spacious, inviting, smart and action-packed that visitors stay to immerse themselves in the content—not just the experience of consumption.

Museum Store of the Month: MASS MoCA

Fun fact: during the Depression, the original factory that occupied the industrial complex where MASS MoCA now stands was forced to close. When World War II broke out, the building was converted to house the Sprague Electric Company, whose large Research and Development department was responsible for the research, design and manufacture of the trigger for the atomic bomb, as well as components of the launch systems for the Gemini space missions.

That spirit of invention and willingness to explore lives on in the MASS MoCA R&D Store.
